Pōhakuokane - Moʻolelo Animation Hālāwai Aʻo (Workshop)

Event Description:

The March 2024 Limahuli Kupulau Program is a creative workshop focused on animation, 3D modeling, and environmental storytelling. This event, hosted at Limahuli Gardens, offers participants a deep dive into Hawaiian cultural narratives, specifically exploring the Moʻolelo of Pōhakuokāne, through a series of storytelling, drawing, and digital creation activities.

Schedule: Day 1: Monday, March 18

• Morning: Introduction to Moʻolelo and Ahupuaʻa mapping, focusing on Hāʻena Ahupuaʻa and its place names.
• Midday: Practical work on Pōhaku (stones) including their shapes, sizes, and types.
• Afternoon: 3D modeling and voice acting sessions.

Day 2: Tuesday, March 19

• Morning: Dive into the Hauā Kai realm, exploring Hāʻena Reef and local fish species, followed by practical work on Iʻa (fish) identification and modeling.
• Midday and Afternoon: Continue with 3D modeling and asset creation.

Day 3: Wednesday, March 20

• Morning: Exploration of Limahuli endemic plants and their significance.
• Midday and Afternoon: 3D modeling of plants and discussing their uses and importance.

Day 4: Thursday, March 21

• Morning: Hike to Limahuli Mountain Range and reflections on the spiritual and physical landscape.
• Midday and Afternoon: Final project work, completing animations and preparing presentations.

• Participants: The event features notable speakers including Lei Wann, Noah Kaaumoana, Nani Holroyd, Emily Cadiz, and Kaliko Maii.
• Tools and Equipment: Attendees will use tools like NOMAD for 3D modeling and other digital media tools to create animations and soundscapes.
• Device Care: Guidelines are provided for the care and usage of iPads and Apple Pencils which are integral to the workshop activities.
