About the event

JANUARY – JUNE 2023

Kaua'i Dev has partnered with the Kaua'i Community Science Center to provide a Free Virtual Reality World Building Program. This Program is called Climate Connect VR where students will have the opportunity to build their own VR environments and see how developers around the world are using VR to connect people to climate.

INTENTION This course is intended to familiarize students with a high-level understanding of the evolution of the internet and internet technology, reflect on how it has and will continue to impact the island of Kaua'i and gain a deeper perspective on how Virtual Reality fits into all of this. Together we will transition our relationship with these relatively new mediums from consumer to creator and explore the many ways others are using these platforms to change the world and tell important stories.

CURRICULUM 1. Internet Technology (History & Future on Kaua'i): Introduction to web 3.0 - AR, VR, XR, AI & Blockchain Technology. 2. Intro to Virtual Reality & World Building: Virtual Word use cases such as Climate Education and ways to promote change. 3. Group VR Ahupua'a Project: Learning how to build in VR by participating in the build of a Virtual Ahupua'a with guidance and inspiration from some of our Kaua'i Cultural Leaders and Kapuna. 4. Student Worlds: Students will curate a concept for the virtual world they want to create. The science center will then connect each student with a local professional pertaining to the subject each student has chosen. Students will be working with the team at Kaua'i Dev as they build their own world in VR. 5. Sharing & Testing: Students will invite their classmates, VR teachers, and local professionals to come and test their world. Learn about user testing, accessibility, user experience & developer problem-solving strategies. 6. Showcase: Students will develop multiple ways to showcase their completed worlds to their community. Banners, Previews, VR Events & the grand finale where the students will showcase their worlds at a public event at Waimea Theater.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE Students ages 13 and up who are able to show up in person at the Kaua'i Community Science Center in Waimea, Kaua'i for at least the 4 required in-person workshops. Scheduling for all workshops will be dependent on the availability of the students participating.
